We make our way unto the ferry in the morning, where in 9 hours it takes us from Germany to Malmö, in Sweden. This ferry is a world of difference with the one that took us from Greece to Italy: it's well organized, clear sign, friendly staff, runs on time, clean, lot's of public seating space. Once arrive we drive north a bit to stop at a trailhead parking lot. (Even with a pit toilet nearby, we already like Sweden!)
Then the next days we drive along the coast, towards Norway. Past Göteborg we take it easy, skipping the highway to enjoy the views of the smaller country roads. We hike some (of course) and take ferries unto little islands on two occasions. This area (the Bohuslan province) is gorgeous: the coast is all smooth, harsh looking rock dotted with pine trees or colorful wooden houses. Not a single stretch of the coast is a straight line and the number of islands, big and small, are countless. We even find the courage to swim in the sea a couple of times, though the water is cold. Though it should also be said it's very touristy. Parking in the adorable old fishing town for example is next to impossible and the last ferry was so packed we couldn't fit.
The weather is a real relieve, a steady 20°C during the day, mixed sunny and cloudy with only little bits of rain. It's hard to remember we were dying in the heat barely three weeks ago in Italy. We also feel very comfortable camping around here, mostly because the free camping culture is strong. We manage to put off a real campsite until about every 3rd night, when we run out of water and require a real shower! (It also helps that we're not sweating like crazy during the day anymore...)
Now we've crossed into Norway, as we were close and it's actually the shortest route to Håltebyn (Sweden). We've exchanged the rocky coastline with dense pine forests and peaceful lakes. And it seems we left most people behind too, which we were hoping for of course.
And today we celebrate 100 days of traveling! (If you don't reset the count having been in the Netherlands.) The interim score:
- Distance driven: 9'780 km
- Unique locations stayed overnight: 55
- Number of countries stayed in: 10
- Number of times stuck in mud or gravel: 2 (which is not a lot but odd we let it happen twice)
- Amount of solar energy captured and used: 45 kWh (I estimate some 90% is just for the fridge)
- Number of nights in real campsites: 35, in work-a-way: 18, with family: 21, free camped: 24, hostel/hut: 2
