Day 68-71: Return to Pegli

Published: 04-07-2025, 16:32

We're getting a bit bored of Senigallia now. We had an halfhearted attempt at going out, where we entertained ourselves by observing the local teenagers being awkward and listening to a band play by the beach. And we spend an afternoon taking a train into the city Ancona, which is unexpectedly pretty. It's truly packed with ancient buildings, each casually squeezed into the old town.

Come Monday it's finally time to bring Vespa to the garage. While we wait they find the coolant pump is entirely shattered on the inside, somehow, but they can replace it. We hang around, have lunch in a trattoria and hide in an air-conditioned shopping mall desperate to get out of the heat for a bit. By early evening we head back to the garage where fortunately the mechanic fixed up the van again! We're happy to abandon any plans of emergency B&Bs and instead move on again. It's a bit a late, so we drive inland barely an hour, where we settle on an informal campsite in the hills. This is such a breath of fresh air compared to the days before: it's quiet (no trains at night), grassy (no choking dust), spacious (no neighbors breathing in your neck) and cheap (€15 per night, not €40). It's something we noticed in the years before too, Italian beaches can be so nice but campsites near them always suck.

In the hills we relax and walk a bit the next day. Then we drive most of the way towards Genova but camp and spend one more day in the mountains. It's just in time for lunch when we park the van in Pegli once more, and lunch lasts until 17:00.

The coming days we'll hang around with friends and family of Federica and take care of some logistics. It's pressingly hot here and we're really starting to look forward to our interlude (Netherlands) and part II of the Journey (Scandivia and Baltics)!
